Causes of a goldfish floating belly-up

1. Low oxygen

Long-term low oxygen is a common cause. At first the fish just gasps; if it persists, belly-up follows.

Response: add oxygen at once to avoid death. With many fish, install an air pump and change/air the water regularly; with few fish and no pump, change water regularly.

2. Poor digestion

Overfeeding with slow digestion lets food pile up and bloat the gut, and severe bloating flips the fish.

Response: stop feeding and raise temperature to about 28°C; warmth aids metabolism, and once food digests the flipping stops.

3. Swim bladder imbalance

Imbalance often comes with flipping or sinking, from causes like food scraping internal organs or organ inflammation.

Response: move the fish to shallow water and use a brace for balance, then treat the root cause. If inflammation, use an anti-inflammatory bath to ease it and speed recovery.

4. Enteritis, ascites, and other disease

Enteritis, ascites, or ich also flip the fish, often at the bottom. If temperature and water are fine and the bladder is normal, suspect illness — but these diseases bring other signs too (enteritis: low appetite, dark body, white thread-like mucus). With many odd symptoms, contact a vet for a confirmed diagnosis and targeted treatment.

In short, many causes need targeted responses. Some are avoidable — keep water good and oxygen ample to lower the risk.
