1 Causes of Cat Anemia and What to Do

Cat anemia has many causes: blood-loss anemia, hemolytic anemia, bone-marrow failure from disease, and nutritional deficiency. Here are the common causes and fixes.

1. Blood-Loss Anemia

Usually from heavy bleeding after injury. Stop the bleeding promptly; severe cases need the bleed point closed and a blood transfusion. Diagnosed via platelet count and clotting time.

2. Hemolytic Anemia

Linked to unstable cell membranes (PK or PFK deficiency), from mechanical damage (glomerulonephritis, DIC, tumors) or toxic hemolysis (Heinz-body anemia, hypophosphatemia). Many poisons cause regenerative or non-regenerative anemia – zinc or other heavy-metal poisoning causes regenerative hemolytic anemia; lead or estrogen poisoning causes non-regenerative. Blood parasites (Babesia, Hepatozoon, heartworm, rickettsia, Hemobartonella) also cause it. Gut-parasite anemia is treated with dewormer; blood-parasite anemia needs a vet injection.

3. Nutritional Deficiency

A poor or unbalanced diet over time causes anemia. Iron or copper deficiency impairs hemoglobin synthesis – confirm via CHR and serum-copper tests. Supplement iron plus copper, zinc, B12, and K; iron-rich supplements are the fastest fix. Also feed meat (beef, lamb) and liver, and choose a balanced, nutrient-rich cat food as the staple to prevent deficiency.

4. Disease-Related Anemia

FIV, FeLV, and similar diseases can impair bone-marrow production and cause anemia. Treat the primary disease while supplementing blood to improve the anemia.
