Why Dogs Itch and How to Treat It

1 Causes of Itching
(1) Allergy: generalized rash and itch point to allergy, needing medication — corticosteroids, antihistamines, adrenal and chemical antiallergics all work. (2) Environment: humid, cold-wet, over-dry, or changeable weather can directly or indirectly cause itch; winter indoor heating dries the coat and raises dander and itch. Dogs on concrete often show elbow hair loss, thickened darkened skin, and callus itch from floor contact. Flea bites cause an allergic skin reaction (not the crawl itself), usually on the back and tail base, with self-trauma, hair loss, weeping dermatitis, and pigment change. Straw, sawdust, and other bedding can irritate directly or via their bacteria, parasites, and pollutants — remove these and itch improves.
(3) Diet: lacking fatty acids, vitamins, or minerals brings varying itch. (4) Nerves: central nervous system upset, e.g., rabies. (5) Whole-body itch may signal internal disease — jaundice, tumors, diabetes, uremia — and skin masses like histiocytoma or lymphoma; internal parasites reaching the skin also itch.
