1. Teething discomfort

At about 3 weeks teeth come in until 7 months; the pup explores with its mouth and chews what looks fun or edible.

During teething give rubber toys to relieve itch.

2. Marking ownership

A dog claims a liked item, like its toy, by chewing to show ‘mine’; some chew the owner’s heel to leave scent and say ‘mine’.

3. Seeking attention

Videos show a dog destroying the home on the owner’s return, who then scolds it. The dog reads scolding as attention and does worse next time.

Long alone and lonely, it makes a mess to get attention. Spray a disliked scent on furniture and shoes to keep it away.

4. Emotional release

Scolded and unhappy, plus past scolding for chewing, the dog deliberately angers the owner to release emotion.

5. Pica

If it often chews shoes, raids trash, eats poop or plants, watch for pica from missing trace elements; consult a vet and supplement.
