Why a Puppy Has Bloody Diarrhea and How to Treat It

I. Causes of Bloody Diarrhea in Puppies

For unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated dogs, first consider whether an infectious disease is present – canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus, coronavirus, adenovirus, etc., all of which can cause puppies to have diarrhea and blood in stool. Next are some parasite infections in the stomach and intestines, the more common being tapeworm, roundworm, whipworm, and trichomonads. When severe, these parasites can cause some blood in stool and diarrhea. Then there are some bacterial infections in dogs, or gastrointestinal fungal infections, which also cause blood in stool and diarrhea. A second reason is the dog eating something it should not, like large bones or sharp objects, causing damage, inflammation, and bleeding of the gastrointestinal mucosa. Finally, some internal diseases cause digestive tract collapse, such as some poisonings, eating onions, daffodils, or heatstroke.

II. How to Treat Bloody Diarrhea in Puppies

A puppy with bloody diarrhea is likely from long-term consumption of hard-to-digest food, such as spoiled food or low-quality kibble, causing poor digestion and intestinal mucosa damage. So once bloody diarrhea is found, switch to high-quality natural feed.

A young dog with bloody diarrhea may be infected with distemper, parvovirus, or other infectious diseases, or may have gastrointestinal disease such as gastroenteritis or enteritis. For this, take the puppy to the hospital for an infectious disease test, then treat accordingly after a confirmed diagnosis.

Once a puppy is infected with parasites or has gastrointestinal mucosal bleeding, it can also cause bloody diarrhea; first feed an appropriate amount of probiotics or lactase to regulate. If there is no improvement, take the dog for a checkup promptly; if it is parasites, give deworming medicine.
