1. The smell may not be urine at all — consider anal gland leakage. Excited or stressed cats secrete from the anal glands, causing a very fishy, foul odor; if the glands are inflamed or swollen, see a vet to have them expressed.

2. Intact male cats in heat urinate often and little to mark territory, so the strong scent spreads if not cleaned promptly.

Male cats reach sexual maturity around six months. If you don’t plan to breed and want to stop heat behaviors (spraying, strong odor, calling, escaping), neuter — it controls spraying and the odor fades.

3. Urinary disease also raises body odor. Male cats’ urethra structure makes blockage more likely; early blockage causes frequent, scanty urination and high blood ammonia, worsening the smell.

Don’t panic — it isn’t always disease. Judge by the cat’s condition; if blockage or other abnormality is suspected, go to a vet promptly.

A normally strong or heat-related odor is normal — urine naturally holds metabolic waste. For a smelly home, use an odor-breaking deodorizing spray rather than a masking air freshener, choose an absorbent deodorizing litter, clean right after urination, and ventilate often. The smell clears quickly with good hygiene.
