At What Temperature Do Rabbits Freeze to Death?
๐ Summary
Rabbits die below 5ยฐC โ their floor โ and feel unwell below 10ยฐC, so winter warmth is a must. This guide covers the warming steps and vaccines to keep them safe.
1 Cold Thresholds and Warming
Rabbits are temperature-sensitive; 5ยฐC is the limit and below it they freeze, even with thick fur. Below 15ยฐC they show poor digestion โ low spirit, poor appetite, diarrhea. Kits can die even above 5ยฐC, so warm them in cold weather:
1. Build a warmer nest (straw in the cage) in a wind-sheltered spot; on warmer midays let them out to exercise and raise resistance.
2. Give some light; if none, take them out for sun when possible.
3. In cold wind, wrap the hutch windows in plastic to block drafts.
4. Pet rabbits can wear a cute warming coat and get warm water; use a heater if needed.
5. Despite low activity, winter burns more energy and appetite drops, so keep protein- and energy-rich feed up.
Winter also brings more viral disease, so vaccinate every 3โ4 months without slack. Rabbits easily get respiratory disease in winter โ watch for signs and treat promptly.
