1. Fighting Over Food
Guinea pigs usually get along, but they compete for food. Two similar in size and age fight less over food; a big size gap leads to bullying, which may still cause injury.
2. Status Competition
After maturing they care about group leadership, so cage-mates must fight a while to decide the pig king. This happens regardless of sex, but males usually fight harder.
3. Boars in Heat
A boar in heat may fight over behavioral conflict, for example if a male-female pair has a reluctant female, or two males grow more aggressive from hormones and fight over the female or leadership.
4. Other Reasons
Even gentle pigs living long together clash over small daily matters; occasional fights are normal.
2 What to Do When Guinea Pigs Fight
1. Stop It Promptly
Separate them at once, but do not use your hands, or you may be bitten. Shout first, the timid pig usually stops; if that fails, use cardboard or chopsticks to split them.
2. Comfort Them
Comfort the loser with a treat so it does not brood; if the winner looks smug, put it in its place so it knows who is really boss, making it more obedient later.
3. Separate the Cages
If fighting is from heat-driven aggression, cage them apart; if no spare cage, add a mesh, board, or cardboard divider down the middle.
4. Treat Wounds
For light injuries, use iodine; for serious ones, go to a vet.
