How to Handle a Non-Cycling Doe

1. Use a buck: for a doe that has not cycled for a long time, put her in the buck’s cage so he mounts her; after 2 to 3 stimulations some cycle normally.

2. Vulva stimulation: ① gently pat the doe’s vulva to induce estrus, lifting her tail with one hand and patting with the other until she raises her rump, then put her in the buck’s cage to mate. ② rub the vulva with a finger for 1 to 2 minutes; when it looks swollen and red, put her in the buck’s cage at once. ③ apply 2 percent dilute iodine tincture to the vulva lips, then put her in the buck’s cage to mate.

3. Hormones: ① the day before mating, subcutaneously inject 100 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG), then 24 hours later intravenously inject 60 IU human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). ② intramuscularly inject 0.75 to 1 ml diethylstilbestrol or combined hormone; estrus in 2 to 3 days, then mate. ③ intramuscularly inject 5 mcg ovulation hormone or 0.2 ml Receptal; mate at once or within 4 hours. ④ morning and evening subcutaneously or intramuscularly inject 0.6 ml follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) dissolved in 4 ml saline for 3 days; estrus on day 4, then intravenously inject 2.5 ml luteinizing hormone and mate at once.

4. Medicine: feed 3 to 5 g estrus powder daily for 3 days, and give 2 vitamin E tablets daily for 3 to 5 days.

5. Nutrition: for weak non-cycling does, 1 to 2 weeks before mating raise the amount of complete concentrate feed, and also give malt sprouts, carrots, and similar foods. Without complete feed, add properly roasted beans or vitamins to the concentrate.
