What if a dog eats a desiccant?

Expert Answer

Identify the desiccant first; quicklime burns the gastric mucosa causing abdominal pain, vomiting, and bloody stool, even death – take the dog to a vet at once. Silica gel usually has little effect as it is hard to digest but passes with stool if the amount is small.

Large amounts of silica gel may cause intestinal blockage with vomiting and pain, also needing a vet.
