What happens if a bone gets stuck in a dog’s throat?

A bone stuck in a dog’s throat may block the airway, causing symptoms such as breathing difficulty, wheezing, coughing, mouth breathing, an extended neck, and a blue tongue (a sign of oxygen deprivation), and may even directly cause choking and death. Second, although some small bones may not block the airway, they can scratch or puncture the soft tissue of the throat, causing severe pain shown as constant coughing, swallowing, and head shaking as the dog tries to expel the foreign object.

Finally, because of the throat obstruction or pain, the dog may be unable to swallow food and water normally, leading to reduced appetite or even complete refusal to eat. If a dog shows breathing difficulty after a bone is stuck in its throat, the Heimlich maneuver must be performed immediately for first aid; if ineffective, take it to a pet emergency as soon as possible.
