The fortune fish is suitable to be kept with fish such as map fish, blood parrot cichlid, arowana, and flowerhorn cichlid. The fortune fish has an aggressive temperament and grows fairly large when adult, so it is not suitable to mix with gentle fish, to avoid it biting them to death.

Generally, it is recommended to keep the fortune fish with larger fish. When aggression and size are comparable, fights among fish are relatively fewer, and they have the ability to fight back, making it less likely that one side dies.
