Causes

1. Foreign object: the most common cause, when dust, an insect, or a lash irritates the eye over time.

2. Excess eye discharge: daily discharge breeds bacteria if not cleaned, leading to inflammation.

3. Diet: feeding human food, too-dry hot pellets, and little water causes internal heat and then eye inflammation.

Treatment

For a foreign object, remove it with a swab or tweezers or flush with pet eye drops; check the eyes often to avoid long-term irritation.

For discharge and bacteria, clean the eye corners daily to ease discomfort and reduce bacteria; if inflammation is severe, see a vet.

For diet-related heat, change to a light diet of vegetables and greens like carrots, and avoid hot, spicy, salty food; the eyes recover gradually.
