๐Ÿ“ Summary

Popular large rabbit breeds include the French Hotot (8โ€“11 kg, with panda-like eye markings), the gentle Holland Lop (2โ€“2.5 kg), the fast-growing American Angora (5.3 kg by 11 months), and the massive Belgian Giant Chinchilla (record 12.7 kg). Each differs in temperament and care needsโ€”Holland Lops are heat-sensitive and nocturnal, while Angoras are herbivorous wool producers.

1 Hotot Rabbit

Also called the Hatched rabbit and Panda rabbit, the Hotot originates in France. The large variety weighs 8โ€“11 kg and is very sturdy. Its coat is pure white with only a ring of black fur around the eyesโ€”like oversized panda eyesโ€”which makes it especially endearing.

2 Holland Lop

Gentle by nature, the Holland Lop comes in varied coat colorsโ€”self, broken, tort, and agouti. It weighs about 2โ€“2.5 kg. It prefers dry, quiet surroundings, is timid and easily startled, cold-hardy but heat-sensitive, and likes burrows and a nocturnal routine. By appearance it is divided into standard and non-standard types.

3 Angora Rabbit

The large American Angora originated in Massachusetts, bred from the German Angora, and is recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association. It is herbivorous and a placental mammal. The four main types are the English Angora (the most popular), plus the French, Satin, and Giant Angora.

Large and fast-growing, the Angora reaches 5.3 kg and 55 cm in body length by 11 months. It has a ‘tiger-head’ shape, bare ears, and strong limbs.

4 Giant Chinchilla Rabbit

Originating in Belgium, this breed is very largeโ€”its ears measure at least 14.6 cm and its body at least 50 cm. The heaviest on record reached 12.7 kg; the body is heavily muscled with dense, glossy fur.

5 Other Large Breeds

Beyond these four, many other large breeds exist, such as the Taihang Mountain rabbit and the Belgian rabbit.
