Water Monitor

1 Overview

The water monitor (Varanus salvator) is one of the most common large monitors of Asia – a powerful, semi-aquatic lizard that grows well over a metre. Intelligent and strong, it is an expert-level species.

SOURCE NOTE: the source gave the binomial Varanus salvator, retained here; the lifespan in the source is short – healthy captives often reach 15+ years.

2 Appearance

The body is dark with pale yellow spots and bands; the tail is laterally compressed for swimming. Adults commonly exceed 1.2 m and can reach 2 m.

3 Care & Temperament

Requires a very large, escape-proof enclosure with a substantial water area, high heat, and UVB. MBD and internal parasites are the main health risks.

They are smart and can become tame but are immensely strong – safe handling is essential.

4 Habitat & Environment

Riverbanks, mangroves, and wetlands. Warm, humid, with swimming water and a basking spot.

5 Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous and opportunistic: rodents, fish, eggs, and invertebrates. Feed a varied diet; avoid overfeeding this large lizard.
