Tibetan Pit Viper

1 Overview

The Tibetan pit viper (Trimeresurus tibetanus) is a venomous pit viper of high elevations across the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau. Like all pit vipers it is dangerous and best left to specialists.

2 Appearance

Slender and arboreal-leaning, typically green with red or orange accents in some forms, with the characteristic pit organ between eye and nostril and a prehensile tail. Adults are 60-90 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

WARNING: venomous. Beyond private keeping; in authorised collections it needs a vertically oriented, humid setup with secure locking.

Intestinal parasites are a common captive issue – routine fecal screening is essential.

4 Habitat & Environment

Montane forest and shrubland at altitude. Cooler temperatures and high humidity suit it.

5 Diet & Feeding

Feeds on small mammals and lizards; in authorised collections, appropriately sized rodents.
