Ten Foods Dogs Should Never Eat
π Summary
Many owners feed human food, but not everything is safe. Here are common foods dogs must avoid.
1 Overview
1. Chocolate: theobromine causes vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, arrhythmia, seizures, even death.
2. Onion and scallion: propyl disulfide damages red blood cells, causing hemolytic anemia. Even a little causes severe bloody urine. Never give burgers, curry or soups with onion.
3. Bones: also not advised; large bones cut the esophagus and stomach causing bleeding, though some can be fed only if pressure-cooked soft. Marrow is a great calcium/phosphorus/copper source and big bones clean teeth.
4. Raw eggs and raw meat: raw egg white has avidin that depletes vitamin H and pales the coat; raw egg and meat carry parasites and bacteria causing diarrhea.
5. Milk: different from dog milk; puppies diarrhea easily. Healthy dogs that like it may have some.
6. Grapes and raisins: toxic, causing poisoning; they are very high in glucose/fructose (20% grapes, 40% raisins) and dogs are sugar-sensitive, leading to allergic poisoning and even kidney failure.
7. Spicy food: chili, onion, ginger, garlic cause allergies; seafood has much histamine and also allergies.
8. Animal liver: too much causes vitamin A toxicity and calcium loss. About 3 chicken livers a week can cause bone problems.
9. Too much salt or sugar: table salt is already too salty, overloading kidneys and causing skin disease; too much sugar causes obesity and diabetes.
10. Mushrooms: store mushrooms are harmless but avoid them so the dog does not learn to eat them and later eat wild toxic ones.
Finally, human food is unsuitable; modern dog food is balanced for needs. Less homemade mix, choose a proper professional diet.
