Can I use toilet paper instead of wood shavings for my hamster?

Toilet paper can stand in for wood shavings temporarily, but it is not ideal for long-term use. Wood shavings insulate better and are easier to burrow into, while wet paper sticks to the cage and the hamster and breeds bacteria. If you must use paper, add extra warmth in winter and switch back to shavings as soon as you can.
