When the wood shavings run out, toilet paper can temporarily replace them, but long-term use is not recommended. Compared with toilet paper, wood shavings provide better warmth and are easier to burrow into, making them more suitable for hamsters. Although toilet paper absorbs well, once it gets wet it sticks to the bottom of the cage and breeds bacteria, and it can also cling to the hamster and interfere with its normal activity.

In addition, toilet paper insulates poorly, so if you use it in cold winter weather, make sure the hamster has other warmth measures to avoid catching a chill. If possible, switch the hamster back to wood shavings as soon as you can, and regularly air and replace the shavings you use.
