Symptoms of Anemia in Cats

Many owners are puzzled to find anemia at a routine checkup—'same feeding as others, how did this happen?' They worry and pile on supplements, often with little effect. Long-term anemia disrupts body function and triggers other diseases; finding the root cause is the only real cure.
1 Overview
Causes of anemia:
1. Hemorrhagic anemia: trauma, surgery, GI or urinary bleeding, plus external blood-sucking parasites.
2. Hemolytic anemia: onion poisoning, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, chemicals causing liver failure.
3. Aplastic anemia: often from nutritional deficiency—lack of iron, copper, amino acids, vitamin B6, B12, folate needed to make red cells—or pathology: kidney disease, endocrine disorders, viral infection, tumors, or bone-marrow disease reducing blood production.
Symptoms of anemia:
Pale mucus membranes are easiest to see—nose, mouth, eyelids, vulva. Anemic cats are usually depressed, lose weight, tire easily, sleep more, with faster heart rate and rapid breathing.
Except for poisoning and acute disease, anemia develops gradually and is hard to catch early, but preventable via good daily feeding—balanced staple food, regular deworming. For disease- or poison-caused anemia, treat the disease or detoxify first, then feed high-nutrition food.
