Striped Mud Turtle

1 Overview

The striped mud turtle (Kinosternon baurii) is one of the smallest mud turtles kept in the hobby, reaching only about 10-12 cm. Its neat pale stripes make it a favourite among keepers of mini-aquatic setups.

2 Appearance

The smooth, dark brown to black carapace carries three distinct pale (yellow to cream) longitudinal stripes. The head is small with a pair of barbels on the chin, and the plastron is reduced.

3 Care & Temperament

A small tank with a basking spot, warm clean water, and a soft substrate suits them. They are mostly aquatic but appreciate a haul-out area.

As with all mud turtles, shell rot follows poor water quality, so filtration and regular partial changes matter.

4 Habitat & Environment

Provide shallow, well-filtered water with a gentle land margin and a UVB basking lamp. They tolerate warmer temperatures and appreciate hiding places.

5 Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous: pellets, small fish, insects, and some plant matter. Feed modest amounts every 2-3 days and remove leftovers.
