Spotted Pond Turtle

1 Overview

The spotted pond turtle (Geoclemys hamiltonii) is a distinctive South Asian turtle covered in yellow spots on a dark carapace and skin. It is relatively rare in captivity and commande a higher price.

2 Appearance

The black to dark-brown carapace is studded with yellow spots; the head and limbs show similar spotting. Adults reach 25-35 cm and have a strong, hooked jaw.

3 Care & Temperament

An aquatic turtle needing clean, warm, well-filtered water and a basking spot. They are alert and active but can be nippy.

Shell rot and skin infections follow dirty water, so maintenance matters.

4 Habitat & Environment

Rivers, streams, and ponds across the Indian subcontinent. Keep deep, filtered water with a dry basking area and UVB.

5 Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous and greedy: fish, insects, crustaceans, and some plant material. Feed in water; portion control prevents obesity.
