Spinal cord compression occurs when a mass, displaced vertebra, bulging disc, or migrating parasite presses on the spinal cord, causing pain, weakness, and eventually paralysis. Small breeds such as Pekingese, French Bulldogs, and Dachshunds are especially prone, and timely treatment of the underlying cause is essential.
1 Symptoms
The dominant sign is spontaneous pain: affected pets whine or cry when standing, lying down, jumping, or being touched, and the spine may appear stiff or arched. Some cannot turn the neck voluntarily.
Weakness develops first in the hind limbs, especially noticeable when turning or climbing. Pets may stand or walk with the toes knuckled under or drag the feet. As it progresses, they may collapse, unable to rise, and eventually drag themselves using only the front legs.
Depending on the level and type of lesion, reflexes may be either heightened (spastic paralysis, with penile erection, urine retention, constipation) or depressed (flaccid paralysis, with dribbling urine and a slack anus). Compression at the thoracolumbar junction often brings overactive knee reflexes and partial paralysis; loss of toe-pinch sensation generally carries a poor prognosis.
2 Causes and Transmission
Compression can result from myelitis, bone cysts, vertebral tumors, spinal abscesses, vertebral displacement or malformation, fractures, disc herniation, hemorrhage beneath the dura or within the cord, or parasites migrating through the spinal canal or cord.
It is not contagious. Risk is higher in small, chondrodystrophic breeds and in animals with tumors, trauma, or unresolved intervertebral disc disease.
3 Diagnosis
Diagnosis combines a neurological examination to localize the lesion with spinal imaging. Radiographs, myelography, CT, or MRI identify the compressive mass, disc, fracture, or parasite.
Blood work and, when parasitic migration is suspected, additional testing help define the cause so therapy can target the primary disease.
4 Treatment
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic medication (corticosteroids or NSAIDs under veterinary direction) reduces cord swelling and pain, especially when inflammation is present.
Surgical decompression or removal of a tumor, disc, or parasite may be required. Adjunctive options include laser therapy, localized injection therapy, and acupuncture or rehabilitation to support nerve recovery.
Underlying problems such as tumors or vertebral malformations must be addressed directly, and parasite control is used when migration is the cause.
5 Prevention
Preventing trauma, maintaining a healthy weight, and using harnesses rather than neck collars reduce mechanical strain on the spine.
Routine parasite control lowers the risk of migratory parasite damage, and early veterinary evaluation of back pain or gait changes improves the chance of preserving function.
