A big fish needing a covered 1.5 m tank at pH 6–7 and 25°C, it lives 10–12 years on a carnivorous diet of shrimp, insects, and lean meat.

Reaching well over a meter, it needs a very large tank and must be kept only with similarly sized fish — it will swallow much smaller tankmates. Hardy and easy to keep, but sensitive to cold.

A labyrinth fish that breathes air at the surface, it is easy to keep but must be housed alone or with peaceful tankmates because males fight.
