Ryukyu Black-breasted Leaf Turtle

1 Overview

The Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtle (Geoemyda japonica) is a tiny, endangered leaf turtle endemic to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. It is a conservation-sensitive species and a miniature relative of Geoemyda spengleri.

2 Appearance

Like its cousin, the shell is leaf-shaped and golden-brown with keels; the plastron is dark. It is even smaller, adults around 12-15 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

A humid, semi-aquatic setup with a soft substrate, shallow water, and cover suits it. Shell rot follows wet, dirty conditions.

Shy and sensitive; stable humidity and minimal disturbance are key.

4 Habitat & Environment

Forest floor of the Ryukyu Islands. Mimic with moist substrate, leaf litter, a shallow soak dish, and a warm, shaded spot.

5 Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous: earthworms, insects, snails, and some fruit. Dust with calcium. Feed in the moist zone and refresh water often.
