Reticulated Python

1 Overview

The reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) is the longest snake in the world, regularly exceeding 5-6 m. A powerful constrictor with a striking geometric pattern, it is a flagship large snake.

SOURCE NOTE: the source used the older name Python reticulatus; the current genus is Malayopython.

2 Appearance

The intricate ‘reticulated’ pattern of diamonds and zigzags in browns, golds, and blacks is unmistakable. Wild adults commonly reach 4-6 m, with records over 7 m.

3 Care & Temperament

An expert-only species requiring a very large, secure enclosure and safe handling protocols – adult retics are immensely strong. Never handle large individuals alone.

Mouth rot follows poor hygiene or stress; maintain cleanliness and correct temperatures.

4 Habitat & Environment

Tropical forest, grassland, and near human settlement across Southeast Asia. Warm, humid, with a water basin and climbing structure.

5 Diet & Feeding

Feeds on appropriately sized mammals and birds at intervals scaled to size. Hatchlings take small rodents; adults need larger prey less often. Never overfeed.
