Red-eared Slider

1 Overview

The red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) is the most common pet turtle worldwide. A native of the south-central United States, it has been released across the globe and is now listed among the world’s worst invasive species – never release one into the wild.

It is hardy, sociable, and readily tame, which is exactly why it remains so popular.

2 Appearance

The shell is green in youth with yellow stripe markings, darkening with age. The defining feature is a red or orange stripe behind each eye. Adults reach 20-30 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

Sliders are among the easiest aquatic turtles: a spacious tank, strong filtration, a dry basking spot with UVB, and a balanced diet keep them healthy for decades.

Watch for the common ailments of the group – eye infections (often from poor water), shell rot, and pneumonia from cold or drafts.

4 Habitat & Environment

Provide a large water area with excellent filtration plus a haul-out basking platform heated and lit with UVB. Water should be kept clean and warm (mid 20s C).

They are active swimmers and grow large, so plan for an adult-sized enclosure from the start.

5 Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous: commercial turtle pellets, leafy greens, and supplemental protein (fish, insects, shrimp). Juveniles need more protein; adults lean more herbivorous.

Feed in water and keep portions modest to avoid fouling the tank.
