Recipe: Chicken Liver Powder Cat Food Topper
📝 Summary
Chicken liver powder is a natural topper for homemade cat meals. Dehydrate 500 g liver at 68C for ~10 hours, cool, and grind to powder. Store sealed and add ~1 tsp (5-10 g) daily. Liver should be only ~5% of the diet.
1 Ingredients and Tools
Main ingredient: 500 g fresh chicken liver. No supplements needed. Suitable for cats over one month old. Special tool: a food dehydrator (and a grinder).
2 Drying and Grinding Steps
Step 1 — Prepare: get 500 g of fresh chicken liver. Step 2 — Dehydrate: place the liver in the dehydrator at 68 °C for about ten hours. Because liver is soft, line the tray with a mesh silicone mat, then add the liver; the mat slows drying, so remove it after three or four hours.
Step 3 — Cool: once fully dried the liver snaps easily; let it cool before grinding. Step 4 — Grind: break it up and grind for 3–5 minutes into a powder.
3 Storage and Feeding
Step 5 — Store the powder in a sealed jar in a cool, dry place. Step 6 — Serve: mix it into rice or kibble, about one spoon (5–10 g) per day. Liver is roughly 5% of a staple cat meal; while not recommended in large amounts, reaching toxic levels is hard — since 500 g of liver yields only about 100 g of powder, one 5 g spoon a day is plenty. Cats love the smell we may find less appealing, and show no ill effects.
