Paddy Frog (Rice Frog)

1 Overview

The paddy frog or rice frog (Fejervarya limnocharis) is one of the most widespread Asian frogs, thriving in wetlands, paddies, and disturbed habitats. It is variable in colour and very vocal in the breeding season.

It is a hardy, inexpensive species well suited to a beginner amphibian setup.

2 Appearance

Colour ranges from green to brown with darker mottling and a pair of dorsolateral folds; a pale line often runs down the back. Adults are 4-7 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

A terrestrial-aquatic setup with a shallow water area, humidity, and cover suits them. They are active and tolerant.

The key disease is water mould (Saprolegnia) on damaged skin – keep water clean and handle gently to avoid abrasions.

4 Habitat & Environment

Wet grassland, rice paddies, and pond margins. Mimic with a moist substrate, a shallow dish, and foliage.

5 Diet & Feeding

Insectivorous: crickets, flies, small roaches, and worms. Dust with calcium and vitamins. Feed moving prey.
