Heavy eye discharge and eyes that will not open are often caused by a bacterial or viral infection. If your pet shows no other abnormal signs, rinse the eyes clean with saline first, then apply eye drops containing neomycin sulfate or levofloxacin, and finally a suitable antibiotic eye ointment for a few days of observation.

If your pet also has a runny nose, poor appetite, lethargy, or diarrhea, it is most likely a viral infection and prompt veterinary treatment is recommended.
