Redness, swelling, and hair loss under a dog’s eye can have many causes, usually skin disease; from the photo it may be fungal infection or allergy. Eye redness brings itching, scratching, dandruff, and hair loss, so put on an Elizabethan collar at once to stop scratching, then take the dog to a vet for microscopy of the hair around the eye or scab to confirm the cause. If a hospital visit is impossible, keep the eye dry, clean the discharge, use a Wood’s lamp to rule out fungus, feed hypoallergenic food, avoid oily salty food, apply iodine and erythromycin eye ointment, and give fish oil or lecithin to aid coat regrowth.
