My cat is releasing yellow discharge but has no contractions, doesn’t cry out, and acts completely normal—what does this mean?

If a pregnant cat releases yellow discharge but shows no signs of contractions, the cause needs to be assessed based on her stage of pregnancy and overall condition. In a pregnant cat, contractions usually mean she may give birth within 1–3 hours, but yellow discharge can have many different causes.

First, if the yellow discharge has a foul odor and the cat shows other symptoms such as fever, reduced appetite, or decreased activity, it may indicate a uterine or vaginal infection. In that case, it is best to take her to the vet promptly for a pregnancy check and discharge examination.

If the cat is otherwise normal and still in early pregnancy, the discharge may be a normal secretion—simply keep up with regular prenatal checkups to confirm the due date and fetal viability. If she is in late pregnancy and discharge appears from the vagina, she may be entering labor; monitor her closely, and if more than 12–24 hours pass without contractions or signs of delivery, take her to the vet to determine the cause.

If signs of difficult labor (dystocia) appear, she will need a timely cesarean section; otherwise the kittens remaining in the uterus will gradually suffer oxygen deprivation and die.
