My 3.5-month kitten has had panleukopenia for 8 days, is eating and active but has diarrhea — will it recover?

A kitten infected with panleukopenia for eight days has usually passed the dangerous period, and the diarrhea can very likely be cured through dietary and medical care. During treatment the gut flora is disrupted by the virus and damaged by long-term antibiotics, possibly needing beneficial bacteria.

After panleukopenia there is a long recovery period for the digestive system. Owners should balance the diet, avoid strongly irritating foods, and stop cans, treats and meat; keep food plain and use intestinal prescription diet.

Give the cat active probiotics daily. For severe diarrhea, add cephalexin tablets to reduce inflammation and bismuth subcarbonate to stop diarrhea. After a period of care, recheck the panleukopenia virus and stool to rule out parasites.
