2 Appearance
The Bahia scarlet is a giant among pet spiders, with adults reaching 20–22 cm leg span. Its coloration leans more blue-green than the Brazilian fiery red, with brighter red on the abdomen.
In growth rate, spiderlings take about half a year to a year to grow from 1 cm to 5–6 cm. For slings, keep the substrate humid — they cannot adapt to very dry conditions. Note that the Bahia scarlet is not adept at digging its own burrow.
3 Care Essentials
Because the Bahia scarlet is rare, somewhat aggressive, and a ready hair-kicker, it is not recommended for beginners.
Its defining trait is its large size, so choose an appropriately sized enclosure with enough space. This terrestrial bird-eater likes a tropical rainforest environment, so humidity must be carefully managed. Because the species is uncommon on the market, its price is relatively high.
4 Enclosure Requirements
The Bahia scarlet comes from the Bahia state tropical rainforest, so build the most suitable environment for it.
Ideal temperature 26–28°C, humidity around 75%; a moist substrate of peat, coconut fiber, or clay is recommended. A water dish in the enclosure helps maintain humidity. Note that the Bahia scarlet is not adept at digging, so provide a ready-made hide.
5 Diet
The Bahia scarlet is very expensive and somewhat difficult to keep, so it is rare on the market. What does this giant spider eat?
Feed insects and small birds; even as a sling its growth is fast. Ideal temperature 26–28°C, humidity around 75%; a moist substrate of peat, coconut fiber, or clay is recommended.
