Indochinese Box Turtle

1 Overview

The Indochinese box turtle (Cuora galbinifrons) is a handsome, high-domed Asian box turtle with a hinged plastron that closes for defence. It is popular in the trade and increasingly threatened by collection.

SOURCE NOTE: the source gave only ‘Indo-chinese Box Turtle’; the binomial is Cuora galbinifrons.

2 Appearance

The carapace is domed and yellowish to chestnut with dark blotches; the head is dark with yellow striping and the plastron is dark with pale centres. Adults reach 15-20 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

A semi-aquatic turtle needing a humid enclosure with both shallow water and a planted land area, plus UVB. Shell rot follows wet, dirty conditions.

They are personable and tame readily, but need stable humidity.

4 Habitat & Environment

Forest-edge streams and humid hillsides. Mimic with moist substrate, cover, a shallow soak dish, and a warm basking spot.

5 Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous: earthworms, insects, snails, mushrooms, and some fruit and greens. Dust with calcium. Feed in the moist zone and refresh water often.
