Indian Black Turtle

1 Overview

The Indian black turtle (Melanochelys trijuga) is a dark, keeled freshwater turtle ranging across South and Southeast Asia. It is hardy and semi-aquatic, though some regional forms are localised and of concern.

SOURCE NOTE: the source gave only ‘Three-keeled turtle’; the accepted binomial is Melanochelys trijuga.

2 Appearance

The carapace is dark brown to black with a central keel and a serrated rear margin; the plastron is dark. Adults reach 20-30 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

A semi-aquatic turtle needing clean, well-filtered water and a basking spot with UVB. Shell rot follows poor water quality.

They are generally calm and adaptable.

4 Habitat & Environment

Ponds, streams, and paddy fields. Keep warm, filtered water with a dry basking area.

5 Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous: aquatic plants, insects, fish, and some protein. Feed in water; moderate portions.
