1. Pick healthy fry

Healthy fry are key to survival. Buy in autumn, when fry are sturdy and supply is high, making good ones easier to find. Quality fry have a full body, left-right symmetry, complete scales, rounded fins and tail, and bright color. Healthy fry raise the survival rate.

2. Choose a suitable container

Common containers: aquarium, glass tank, small pond, ceramic basin. Pick by fish size and number. Goldfish suit shallow, wide-mouth containers. For an aquarium, choose a suitably sized one so cramped space doesn’t harm health.

3. Hardware

Equipment includes a siphon, air pump, lighting, and filter. A filter is very important — it aids metabolism and keeps water good, helping health, and lowers how often you change water. Also keep a heater to hold temperature steady.

4. Water treatment

Best temperature 20–28°C, pH 7.5–8.5. If using tap water, let it sit 2–3 days (or sun for ~24 hours) to remove chlorine; fresh tap water can sicken or kill goldfish.

1. Goldfish don’t know when to stop eating — control portions to avoid death by overfeeding. Feed on a fixed schedule and clear leftovers to avoid pollution or low oxygen.

2. Let the tank get some sun for sterilization, but sun also fuels algae growth — clean algae promptly.

3. Control stocking density for enough space. Plant some aquatic plants and lay sand and rocks at the bottom for the fish to play. If keeping several breeds, learn their habits first to avoid mixing aggressive ones.
