1 How to Train It
Start early. With a short life of about two and a half years, train soon and repeat often. The best window is one to four months; after four months habits are set and training gets much harder.
Let it settle. It is very timid, so do not train right after bringing it home—let it learn the environment and you. Give about a week, feeding it twice daily yourself and visiting now and then, then start training once it knows you.
Bond with snacks. Offer small treats to speed familiarity and affection. Once it seeks you, begin training by teaching its name: pick a clear, two-syllable name, call it before each feeding, and feed when it comes close. In about a week it will come at the sound; reinforce for another two weeks.
Teach it to climb onto your hand. Hold a treat in one hand and place the other in front to lure it up, then feed. After repeated sessions it will come to your hand for food, and you can move on to other training.
2 Care and Notes
Newborns are red and furless, blind and deaf in the first week. By two weeks fur and ears develop, hearing starts, and eyes open; the mother nurses them. At three weeks teeth are in and they bite while nursing, so the mother weans them—try easy-to-digest food then.
They are omnivores and can eat vegetables, fruit, herbs, and grains, but their staple is millet, wheat, and corn. Balance the diet for complete nutrition.
Do not overfeed sunflower seeds or other high-calorie foods, or they get fat and unbalanced; also limit vegetables to avoid diarrhea. Beyond the staple, all other foods are only small amounts. Keep clean drinking water available at all times.
Train early, or bad habits raise the difficulty. And feed sensibly to ensure enough nutrition.
