As their owners, we can’t stop aging but won’t watch passively. We can create a better senior life!

How to help your cat age gracefully

Take senior cats for annual full checkups – once a year is enough. Cats with kidney issues should check more often.

X-ray: the most basic check, mainly for joint and organ enlargement.

CBC: checks red/white cells, eosinophils, basophils to judge bacterial/viral infection, parasites, allergy, anemia, dehydration.

Biochemistry: measures ions, enzymes, metabolic waste to assess organ function; used for pre-op evaluation and diagnosis.

Diet: though gut motility drops, protein and fat remain main intake. Choose higher-quality animal protein and fat, avoid plant-based.

Why not senior cat food? Few exist, and senior nutritional needs barely differ from adult, so no need to buy it specifically.

Sleep: for slower metabolism, warmth is ideal. Add blankets/heating pads; with heaters, don’t scorch! (New Year’s face joke)

Space: for mobility-limited seniors, protect joints – avoid top-entry litter boxes, raise bowls, add small steps/ramps to favorite high spots.

Environment: quiet, comfortable, safe; sunny spots preferred. Don’t shout and scare them – older cats take longer to recover.

Cleaning: seniors sleep more and groom less; with decline, help them brush and clean.

Finally, some seniors show dementia (Alzheimer’s)-like signs: accidents, disorientation, unresponsiveness, even forgetting their name/owner, ignoring you or biting when touched.

So be patient and tolerant with senior cats. Spend more time with them!
