The owner first prepares docking tools including iodine, cotton string, or a band; soak the string in iodine or alcohol to sterilize, then tie it tightly at two-thirds of the tail, binding firmly to avoid failure from midway breakage. After about a week, when the puppy’s tail nerves die, the remaining tail falls off automatically; disinfect the area during this time to avoid infection. Also, the best time for docking is the first 7 days after birth; for an older dog, surgical docking at a clinic is advised.
