Base your choice on local natural conditions and market demand so the investment pays off and the stock reaches its full economic value. Common meat breeds raised in China include New Zealand White, Belgian Hare, and large white rabbits. Favor healthy, superior, and high-yield animals, and avoid old, sick, mixed-breed, or low-yield rabbits. For short trips, choose 3-4 month old juveniles; for long trips, choose 8-10 month old adults and avoid newly or not-yet-weaned kits. Healthy stock is the foundation of high, easy-to-manage yields, and superior, high-yield breeds show clear advantages in production.

Different breeds need different living conditions, so when buying breeders, keep the origin climate close to the local climate to ease acclimation. Breeding requires skill and facilities; only proper breeding farms can guarantee quality, so never buy from dealers whose main business is reselling — a common trap to avoid.

When to introduce

Match the local season to the origin season so introduced stock adapts better. Autumn is generally best: the weather cools, transport is easier, rain is lighter, and the dry climate suits the rabbit’s cold-tolerant, dry-loving, moisture-averse nature. After a winter of adjustment, the stock is well suited to local conditions and care by spring and summer.
