1. How Often They Breed

Budgies breed strongly — 3-4 clutches a year and they can come into condition any season, but because of temperature, spring, autumn, or winter pairing is advised; summer heat makes them sick and hurts chick growth. In winter keep them warm and out of drafts.

They mature at 4 months and peak at 3-4 years, laying 4-7 eggs per clutch; output slowly falls with age.

2. Pre-Breeding Signs

Before breeding, a hen pulls chest feathers into the nest to soften it and goes in and out often; before laying she looks anxious and raises her tail.

3. Breeding Care

A hen lays about 5 eggs, usually one a day or every other day. Keep the environment quiet so she isn’t scared into abandoning the nest (which would need artificial incubation).

While incubating she eats less and is fed by the cock; supplement her with corn, cuttlebone, apple, vegetables, carrot, and a few oil seeds (watery veg about every 3 days). Vitamins and electrolytes help if you have them.

Budgies breed readily, but that doesn’t guarantee chick survival — mind the care points to keep chick numbers up.
