How Long Until a Turtle with Pneumonia Dies?
π Summary
If a turtle gets pneumonia and the owner does not treat it in time, it may die in about a month. With prompt care, survival rate is high. Here is how turtle pneumonia leads to death and how to treat it.
1 Does Pneumonia Always Kill?
Pneumonia itself does not directly cause death. Death usually comes from one of these:
Septicemia: untreated or wrongly treated pneumonia spreads systemically and causes septicemia.
Breathing difficulty: most pneumonia starts from a cold; blocked nostrils cause labored breathing, and deep-water turtles can drown.
Malnutrition: appetite drops sharply during pneumonia, causing chronic malnutrition and death.
2 Treatment
Warm rest: keep the tank at 38-40Β°C to stop worsening and ease symptoms.
Medication: early pneumonia can be treated with gentamicin and saline injected into the leg; severe cases need penicillin or cefazolin once daily. Dose by weight.
Vet care: if no improvement, take it to a vet.
