The Shaanxi longhaired sighthound has some guarding ability. Though slim, it has strong muscles, powerful limbs, fast running, a strong bite and keen smell and sight, and was once used for hunting around the Qinling area.

It is also very alert, loyal to its owner, gentle but hostile to strangers, so it can serve as a guard dog.
