Overseas experience shows that low light or darkness favors fattening: in a dim setting where rabbits see only feed and water, sexual development is suppressed, feed efficiency rises, growth accelerates, activity drops, and fighting declines. Dim, quiet conditions also reset their habit of dozing and eating little by day and feasting at night, leveling intake across the day. With less light, sound, and activity reaching them, rabbits startle less, stay calmer, eat more, digest better, and gain weight faster.

Keeping the environment dim clearly helps fattening. Trials show that, under identical feed and management, rabbits raised for six months in darker cages weighed 250–350 g more than those in bright, south-facing outdoor cages. A dim setting is a simple, effective fattening measure worth adopting — but because the rabbits get little sunlight, do two things to protect their health: 1) keep cages clean and disinfect more often to prevent disease; 2) ensure a complete, balanced diet, especially enough vitamins and minerals.
