How do you train a dog to hold an object?

Pick something the dog likes, such as a plush toy, tennis ball or large bone. Let it bite the toy and do not interfere as long as it holds; when it releases, reward with a snack.

After repetition, add commands: say ‘hold’ when presenting the toy and ‘release’ when you want it dropped. With enough practice the dog will understand.
