Himalayan Burrowing Viper

1 Overview

The Himalayan burrowing viper (Azemiops feae) is a rare, primitive, highly venomous viper from high montane forests of the eastern Himalayas. It is nocturnal and secretive.

WARNING: a venomous viper. Like all vipers it is dangerous and should be kept only by licensed specialists with antivenom and protocols – never by hobbyists. Listed for education.

2 Appearance

Stocky and short-tailed with a broad head, it shows a two-toned pattern – often a dark dorsal band and paler sides – in brown or grey. Adults are 60-80 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

Strictly beyond private keeping. In authorised facilities it needs a cool, humid, burrowing-friendly setup with secure locking.

As with other vipers, stress and poor hygiene cause mouth rot.

4 Habitat & Environment

Cool, moist montane forest and leaf litter at elevation. Requires lower temperatures than tropical species.

5 Diet & Feeding

Feeds on small mammals and possibly frogs; in authorised collections, appropriately sized rodents at long intervals.
