Hermann’s Tortoise

1 Overview

Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni) is a small to medium Mediterranean tortoise, one of the most kept tortoise species in Europe. It is long-lived, often reaching 80-100 years.

SOURCE NOTE: the source gave only the fragment ‘Hermann’; the correct binomial is Testudo hermanni.

2 Appearance

The carapace is domed with attractive yellow and black patterning; adults have a characteristic horny spur on the tip of the tail. Two subspecies differ in size and marking intensity.

3 Care & Temperament

Best kept outdoors in suitable climates with a sunny, dry enclosure and a sheltered winter hut for hibernation. Indoors, strong UVB and a dry warm basking area are essential.

Shell rot and respiratory issues arise from damp, cold conditions – keep them dry and warm.

4 Habitat & Environment

Mediterranean scrub: dry, sunny, with sparse vegetation and a burrow or hide for temperature buffering. Allow natural hibernation where safe.

5 Diet & Feeding

Strictly herbivorous: weeds, grasses, and leafy greens. Avoid fruit, animal protein, and excessive legumes, which cause shell deformities.
