Golden-headed Box Turtle

1 Overview

The golden-headed box turtle (Cuora aurocapitata) is a strikingly beautiful, critically endangered Chinese box turtle with a golden head. Wild populations have been devastated by collection and habitat loss.

It survives today mainly through dedicated captive-breeding efforts; only legally captive-bred animals should be involved.

2 Appearance

The head is golden-yellow to orange (the namesake), contrasting with a dark brown carapace and a dark plastron with a pale central region. Adults reach 15-18 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

A semi-aquatic turtle needing a humid enclosure with both shallow water and a planted land area, plus UVB. Shell rot follows wet, dirty conditions.

Given its rarity, responsible breeding – not wild purchase – is paramount.

4 Habitat & Environment

Mountain streams and humid forest in central China. Mimic with moist substrate, cover, a shallow soak dish, and a warm basking spot.

5 Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous: earthworms, insects, snails, mushrooms, and some fruit and greens. Dust with calcium. Feed in the moist zone and refresh water often.
