Four-eyed Turtle

1 Overview

The four-eyed turtle (Sacalia quadriocellata) is an attractive Asian pond turtle named for the two pairs of ocelli (eye-like spots) on the back of its head, used to startle predators. It is semi-aquatic and of conservation concern from collection.

2 Appearance

The carapace is brown with a pale keel; the head bears the namesake four yellow-ringed black spots. Adults reach 12-16 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

A semi-aquatic turtle needing a humid enclosure with shallow water, a planted land area, and UVB. Shell rot follows wet, dirty conditions.

They are shy and do best with cover and minimal disturbance.

4 Habitat & Environment

Hill streams and humid forest. Mimic with moist substrate, a shallow soak area, and a warm basking spot.

5 Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous: earthworms, insects, snails, and some greens/fruit. Dust with calcium. Feed in the moist zone and refresh water often.
